Ancient Sumatra, Sultans of Samudra-Pasai. Sultan Ahmad Malik Az Zahir (746-785 A.H. / 1346-1383 AD), small Gold Kupang. On the front is an Arabic inscription “Ahmad Malik Az Zahir” within beaded border /On the back is an Arabic inscription “Al Sultan Al Adil” within beaded border. Coin reference: Leyten 4.1.5.7; Mitchiner SEA 744 for type. Size: 10.58mm, weights 0.59 grams, grades Extremely Fine. Scarcer southeast Asian medieval gold type. The northernmost tip of Sumatra was an important shipping route and was controlled by wealthy and fiercely independent Muslim Sultanates similar to Greek city-states.
